2007 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Awards 

Criteria for Nomination-Funded by a grant from The Arnold P. Gold Foundation

The UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences will select two recipients----a graduating medical student and a physician medical school faculty member----for the ninth Humanism in Medicine Awards.  Each award of $1000 will be presented at the School=s Commencement Awards Luncheon on May 13, 2007.  The award criteria follows:

Graduating Medical Student
*consistently demonstrates compassion and empathy in the delivery of care to patients
*illustrates professional behavior by example
*shows respect for everyone he/she comes in contact with
*demonstrates cultural sensitivity in working with patients and family members of diverse
  ethnic or religious backgrounds
*displays effective communication and listening skills – good rapport with patients
*adheres to professional ethical standards
*understands a patient’s need for interpretations of complex medical diagnosis and treatment and
  makes an effort to assure patient comprehension – shows respect for the patient’s viewpoint
*helps to articulate the patient’s concerns to attending physicians and others
*pays attention and is sensitive to the patient’s psychological well-being
*is cooperative, easy to work with – engenders trust and confidence
*willing to help others and, when necessary, willing to seek help from others
*displays concern for the general welfare of the community and engages in volunteer activities
*seeks and accepts criticism, using it to improve performance
*is personally committed to objective self-evaluation of his/her own skills

Medical School Faculty Member
*consistently demonstrates compassion and empathy in the delivery of care to patients
*serves as a role model – illustrates professional behavior by example – for students and   
  colleagues
*is approachable and accessible to students
*welcomes opportunities for one-on-one mentorships with students
*exhibits enthusiasm and skill in professional and personal interactions with students
*shows respect for everyone he/she comes in contact with
*demonstrates cultural sensitivity in working with patients and family members of diverse
  ethnic or religious backgrounds
*displays effective communication and listening skills
*understands a patient’s need for interpretation of complex medical diagnosis and treatment and
  makes an effort to assure patient comprehension – shows respect for the patient’s viewpoint
*pays attention and is sensitive to the patients’ psychological well-being
*effectively identifies emotional concerns of patients and family members
*engenders trust and confidence
*adheres to professional ethical standards
*is personally committed to objective self-evaluation of his/her own skills
*prior award recipients are not eligible (Drs. John Joyce, Bryon Danielson, George Johnson, Jon
  Allen, Anil Potti, Kevin Collins, Mark Olson, and Rolf Paulson).

All nominations should include a brief statement of no more than one page describing the potential award recipient=s qualifications for the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award.  Faculty and students are encouraged to nominate either a faculty member, a student, or both.  Nominations must be received by April 6, 2007.  Send to: SPRC/Humanism in Medicine Awards, Office of Student Affairs, UNDSMHS, 501 N.
