The Transitional Year Residency Program is an integrated program of the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences, conducted almost exclusively at MeritCare Health System, Fargo, N.D. The program is structured to provide a preparatory-year's training and develop fundamental skills in inpatient and ambulatory care.

We pride ourselves on being able to offer a solid, community-based training program, with enough flexibility to meet your individual needs. Our program, our staff, and our hospital are committed to a quality educational experience, where each resident's involvement and experiences assure close relationships with peers as well as extensive interaction with faculty.

We are committed to a solid base of general internal medicine training in our program. To that end, we require six months of internal medicine electives, including general internal medicine teaching service and internal medicine subspecialty rotations, plus one month of ER duty.

The flexibility of the UND transitional program allows the resident to explore other medical and surgical specialties that he or she will be interacting with in the future. The comprehensive, one-year curriculum emphasizes hands-on medical study and the freedom to explore elective specialties. Alumni indicate that their training here has serviced them well in the disciplines they entered for categorical training.
