The Psychiatry Residency Training Program at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences is dedicated to the training of well-qualified psychiatrists for a diverse and ever-changing practice environment. Established in 1980, our program has evolved into a small (16 residents total), strong program in which residents and faculty get to know each other well and which, as our residents attest, allows for residents to be treated as individuals with their needs addressed flexibly.

As a community-based training program, we offer residents experience in public, private, university, community, state, and federal settings. The program is fully accredited and provides a full complement of clinical training and didactic opportunities.

Resident participation in research is available and encouraged, among several possibilities, through our affiliation with the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute, an endowed organization devoted to world-class eating disorders and substance abuse research. Other research opportunities are available through the Eating Disorders Institute in Fargo and through collaboration with researchers from four area academic institutions.

Our resident group is diverse in age, gender, culture, and previous medical experience. Our graduates are practicing successfully in the Upper Midwest and throughout the country.
