The residency program is designed to provide residents with an extensive experience in the art and science of medicine in order to achieve excellence in the diagnosis, care, and treatment of patients. To achieve this goal, residents agree to abide by certain policies and guidelines. In return, they are given a number of benefits and the training they need to be successful in their careers.

Purpose
Membership
The Director of Graduate Medical Education chairs the GMEC and is appointed by the Dean. Its voting membership is comprised of the residency program directors, the deans, and a resident from each program nominated by his/her peers. Faculty members and deans serve on the GMEC for the duration of their academic appointments; residents serve one-year terms but can be reappointed for multiple terms. All members of the GMEC are appointed by and serve at the will of the Dean.

Responsibilities
- Writing, implementating, maintaining, and enforcing institutional policies regarding the quality of education and the work environment for residents in each program.
- Verifying that program directors maintain adequate oversight of (and collaboration with) personnel of other institutions participating in residency training on behalf of UNDSMHS.
- Verifying that residency programs comply with the requirements of relevant ACGME Residency Review Committees (RRCs) through timely, periodic internal reviews.
- Verifying that each residency program uses formal, written criteria and processes for the selection, evaluation, promotion, and dismissal of residents in concordance with ACGME and RRC requirements.
- Verifying that each program creates an educational environment in which residents may raise and resolve issues without fear of intimidation or retaliation, and in which the rights of residents are protected by appropriate grievance and disciplinary policies and procedures.
- Verifying that programs are supported by appropriate funding, benefits, and support services.
- Verifying that programs provide an appropriate work environment and duty hours for residents.
- Verifying that residents' curriculum provides a regular review of ethical, socioeconomic, medical/legal, and cost containment issues; an introduction to communication skills, research design, statistics, quality improvement, and critical review of the literature; and attendance at autopsies.
- Verifying that UNDSMHS complies with the institutional requirements of the ACGME through timely, periodic internal review.
