Aren't the winters in Fargo extremely cold?
Sure the winters are cold, real cold, but... the summers, springs and falls are beautiful.

What's the quality of life like in Fargo?
Quality of life is excellent and affordable. Fargo is one of the safest places to live and raise children in the U.S.

What's the job market like in Fargo?
Fargo has a thriving economy and job market. The city serves as a regional hub for medicine, culture, sports, entertainment, retail, business, finance, industry and agriculture. You'll find a wealth of jobs in medicine, education, finance/banking and one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country.

What about your programs? How does the compensation compare to other areas?
Our programs offer competitive salaries for residents, and the average commuting time is approximately 20 minutes.

What are the schools like in Fargo?
Fargo, Moorhead and the surrounding communities offer excellent public and private educational systems. In addition, Fargo-Moorhead is home to a private liberal arts college and two state universities.

Outside of classes, what can I and my family do for fun in Fargo?
Cultural opportunities in music, art and theater abound throughout the Fargo-Moorhead community. You'll also find a wealth of recreational opportunities (golf courses, bike paths, snowmobile trails, indoor sports facilities and more). Plus, Fargo-Moorhead is right on the doorstep of Minnesota's Land of 10,000 Lakes.

How much call do residents take?

  • PGY-1's NO psychiatry call responsibility; on-call every 4th night for three months of medicine
  • PGY-2's On-call for a total of 26 times
  • PGY-3's On-call for a total of 26 times
  • PGY-4's On-call only a total of 3 - 5 times to orient PGY-2 residents

Are there opportunities for residents to participate in research?

  • Residents have advanced opportunities in research
  • The affiliated Neuropsychiatric Research Institute is a private research institute devoted to world-class eating disorders and substance abuse research
  • NRI has a multimillion dollar endowment for research
  • Eating Disorders Institute has opened in Fargo
  • Other research opportunities available potentially through collaboration with researchers from four area academic institutions

How much contact do residents have with faculty?

  • We are a small program, so you actually get to know the faculty
  • Close working relationships with supervisors and teachers
  • PGY-1 residents are assigned an advisor at the start of their training
  • PGY-2 residents are assigned a senior-resident advisor or may choose a mentor for continued support
  • PGY-3 residents choose a mentor to help plan their PGY-4 year
  • PGY-4 residents continue with a mentor for support
