Upcoming Grant & Contract Training Sessions

Subcontracting With Outside Entities

September 12, 2008

Reed Keller Auditorium

UNDSMHS

2:00pm to 3:00pm

Many sponsored projects require the use of an outside party to assist us with completing our goals.  The use of this outside party on a sponsored project requires us to write a subcontract document.  While it may seem simple to contact the outside party for a verbal commitment, the University requires certain documentation at the proposal stage.  This training session focuses on (1) the definition of a subcontractor; (2) the difference between a subcontractor and a consultant; (3) what documentation is needed for subcontracting with outside entities; (4) how we pay a subcontractor for their work; and (5) our legal rights if work is not completed satisfactorily by the subcontractor.

Reed Keller Auditorium

UNDSMHS

2:00pm to 3:00pm

Previous Grant & Contract Training Sessions

What Am I Signing Anyway?

April 16, 2008

Reed Keller Auditorium

2:00pm to 3:00pm

It is the policy of the University that all externally funded proposals be reviewed and signed by the Principal Investigator(s), Department Chairperson, Dean, Grants & Contracts Administration, and the Research Development & Compliance Office. We all know that, but what does it mean when you sign this proposal? This training session discusses in detail (1) what the Principal Investigator and the University is committing to by signing this proposal; (2) how different employees review the proposal for different reasons; and (3) how this proposal will affect individuals and resources at the department and college level.

Locating Funding Sources For Your Ideas

May 13, 2008

Reed Keller Auditorium

2:00pm to 3:00pm

You have a wonderful idea for a grant proposal. But where do you send your proposal? Who may be interested in your proposal? This training session will answer those questions and many more by (1) focusing on locating agencies and foundations who may fund a grant project in your area of expertise and/or interest; and (2) discussing websites which may assist you with locating the perfect sponsor for your idea.

Proposal Budget and Budget Justification

June 18, 2008

United Hospital Lecture Hall

2:00pm to 3:00pm

For many Principal Investigators, the hardest part of proposal development is the proposal budget and the budget justification.  For those individuals, this training session is a welcome relief, as it will focus on (1) the difference between the budget and the budget justification; (2) what costs are normally allowable and what costs are normally unallowable; (3) proper budget and budget justification forms; (4) figuring personnel expenses and percentage of effort; (4) including a subcontract in your budget; and (6) calculating F&A Costs (Indirect Costs).

F&A Costs (Indirect Costs)

July 16, 2008

United Hospital Lecture Hall

2:00pm to 3:00pm

It is the policy of the University of North Dakota to recover full F&A Costs (Indirect costs) as defined by our federal negotiated rate agreement. But, do you ever wonder why the University is so ademate about this policy?  This training session will focus on answering that question by addressing other questions such as (1) what are F&A Costs; (2) what do the F&A Costs pay for; (3) what if some sponsors limit the amount of F&A Costs we can ask for; (4) why do we have different F&A Cost rates for different activities; and (5) how often does the F&A Cost rate change.

Effort Certification

August 12, 2008

Reed Keller Auditorium

UNDSMHS

2:00pm to 3:00pm

The University is required to comply with federal regulations stating that we have a system in place for certifying salaries and wages associated with federally sponsored agreements.  We comply with this requirement by certifying to our effort on grant projects with the use of a form called a Personnel Activity Confirmation (PAC) form.  This training session answers many employee questions by discussing (1) what effort is; (2) why we certify to our effort; (3) how we certify to our effort; (4) what reasonable effort is; (5) who can sign effort certification reports; (6) how often we have to certify to our effort; and (7) what your signature on this form means.
