Objectives of the Elective:
- Learn the principles of medical genetics.
- Apply these medical genetics principles in the clinical setting.
- Understand the provision of medical genetic services in a rural state.
Instructional Activities:
- Patient evaluations, discussions, and counseling participation.
- Textbook readings in the area of medical genetics.
- Oral presentation on a medical genetics topic of the student's own choice.
- Attendance at lectures presented by the preceptor.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) that Indicate Attainment of Objectives:
- Participation in clinics, patient evaluations, etc.
- Be able to perform a medical genetics evaluation.
- Be able to discuss pertinent genetic principles involved in each case.
- Be knowledgeable of the diagnostic criteria, prognosis, and management of individual patients with specific genetic disorders.
Criteria for Grading:
- Must master medical genetic principles satisfactorily, as determined by daily use and formal oral exam.
- Must have satisfactory rating or above on pertinent clinical competencies listed on Fourth Year Student Clinical Performance Evaluation.
- Must satisfactorily present topics of choice.
- Must satisfactorily pass final practical examination.
