Grading Criteria

Day-to-day performance during the clerkship is 2/3 of the final grade:

  • Faculty evaluations of student's clinical performance = 1/3.
  • Student’s portfolio: H&Ps and LIs, departmental exam, *Clerkship Director's score = 1/3.

* The Clerkship Director's score is composed of:

  1. Clinical Cases (complete and timely)
  2. Didactics (preparation and response)
  3. Patient database (quality and quantity)
  4. EKG cases (complete and timely)

Evaluation scale is as follows:

>50% exceeds expectations
50% meets expectations
<50% below expectations

Performance on the National Board Subject Examination in Internal Medicine comprises 1/3 of the final grade.

Requirements for a Satisfactory Grade

  1. Mean clinical evaluation score of >=75 points.
  2. Satisfactory completion of portfolio.
  3. NBME Subject exam score of annualized 8 th percentile or better (this is usually in the low 60s, but varies from year to year).

Determination of Class Rank

  1. Points will be awarded for each of the three criteria:
    • Faculty evaluations of clinical performance (33.3%)
    • Portfolio, departmental exam, Clerkship Director's score (33.3%)
    • Score on the NBME (33.3%)
  2. A total score will be calculated by the formula:

    Total points =

    0.333 (clinical performance) + 0.333 (.067 Clerkship Director's eval, .133 physical diagnosis exam, .133 two H&Ps and two LIs) + 0.333 (NBME)
  3. At the end of the academic year, all students from the three campuses will be ranked by total score.
  4. Total scores will not be used to determine if a student passes the clerkship. Total scores will be used only to determine class rank and Honors grades.

Requirements for Honors Grade

  1. All requirements for a Satisfactory grade must be met without remediation.
  2. Students must have clinical performance which “meets expectations” or “exceeds expectations.” This will be defined by no overall clinical evaluation scores of 1 (one) or less.
