A division of the Department of Family & Community Medicine, the Center strives to disseminate Tobacco Cessation information and resources for the health care community in North Dakota. Continuing education programs are available, presented by Dr. Eric L. Johnson, M.D., physician consultant for the North Dakota Tobacco Quitline. Additionally, services are available to assist health care facilities and providers in the delivery of effective Tobacco Cessation systems.

The North Dakota Tobacco Quitline, a joint project of the North Dakota Department of Health, the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center, and the University of North Dakota School of Medicine Department of Community Medicine, began operation in September of 2004 as a program of Tobacco Cessation for North Dakota tobacco users.

Approximately 20% of North Dakota adults use tobacco, and it is a substantial contributor to morbidity and mortality in our state, with nearly $200 million in direct medical costs.

Callers to the Quitline's toll free number receive up to five counseling sessions, and the service is free to all North Dakotans. Professional counselors are trained at the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center in Rochester, Minnesota. To date, 6 month quit rate is approximately 39%, with a 12 month quit rate of 33%, among the highest in the nation.  Physician consultant for the project is Dr. Eric L. Johnson, M.D.
