Objectives of the Elective:
- Enhance the student's skills in the diagnosis and treatment of surgical
disease.
- Expose the student to the rural practice of surgery.
- Enhance the student's skill in the OR with first assisting and performance
of surgical procedures.
- Expose the student to trauma in a rural setting.
- Expose the student to surgical endoscopy and laparoscopy.
Instructional Activities:
- Daily case discussion.
- Supervision of student while performing procedures.
- Discussion of current standards of practice/ethical issues.
Standards of Performance (Outcome) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
- Presentation of cases on daily rounds.
- Responsible for daily care of patients, including notes and orders.
- One formal presentation to the medical staff on a surgically relevant
topic (slides not required).
- Available for on-call procedures.
- Documentation will be by written evaluation, utilizing current department
of surgery forms.
Criteria for Grading:
- Attendance.
- Review of history and physicals and daily progress notes.
- Ability to work with medical personnel.
- Presentation of a 20-30 minute lecture to medical staff on topic of
choice/will be reviewed and discussed.
- Attitude.
