Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Enhance the student's skills in the diagnosis and treatment of surgical disease.
  2. Expose the student to the rural practice of surgery.
  3. Enhance the student's skill in the OR with first assisting and performance of surgical procedures.
  4. Expose the student to trauma in a rural setting.
  5. Expose the student to surgical endoscopy and laparoscopy.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Daily case discussion.
  2. Supervision of student while performing procedures.
  3. Discussion of current standards of practice/ethical issues.

Standards of Performance (Outcome) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Presentation of cases on daily rounds.
  2. Responsible for daily care of patients, including notes and orders.
  3. One formal presentation to the medical staff on a surgically relevant topic (slides not required).
  4. Available for on-call procedures.
  5. Documentation will be by written evaluation, utilizing current department of surgery forms.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Attendance.
  2. Review of history and physicals and daily progress notes.
  3. Ability to work with medical personnel.
  4. Presentation of a 20-30 minute lecture to medical staff on topic of choice/will be reviewed and discussed.
  5. Attitude.
