Purpose:         1.         Further experience in general surgery and in surgical oncology

                        2.         Introduction to the specialty of orthopedic surgery

 

Objectives: Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

 

1. Understand in more detail the specialty of general surgery and specifically of surgical oncology.

 

            2. Perform more advanced skills including suturing and the placement of central lines.

 

            3. Understand how to function as a 1st year resident.

 

4. Better understand the management of the surgical patient but particularly the surgical patient with cancer.

 

5. Understand the principles of fracture management including the correct and safe application of casts.

 

6. Demonstrate the proper assessment of selected musculoskeletal injuries.

 

7. Understand more fully the specialty of orthopedic surgery.

 

Instructional Activities: During this elective, students will be involved in/experience:

 

1.   The peri-operative management of general surgical patients, including those with cancer.

 

2.       Fluid and electrolyte management of surgical patients.

 

3.       Evaluation and management of surgical patients in the emergency room.

 

4.       The application of casts in fracture management.

 

5.       The evaluation and management of orthopedic injuries.

 

6.       The appropriate assessment of  musculoskeletal diseases seen in an orthopedic practice.

 

Criteria for Grading: During and following this acting internship, the preceptor will:

 

1.       Evaluate by direct observation the clinical skills of the student in the clinic and hospital including the

operating room.

 

2.       Observe professionalism by direct observation of the studen’s interaction with various surgical staff

       including nurses, other students, residents and faculty.

 

3.       Judge manual dexterity by direct observation of examination of various musculoskeletal injuries and of cast application.

 

4.       Evaluate the student’s ability to perform preoperative histories and physical examinations.

 

1.       Evaluate the student’s skills in postoperative management of surgical patients.
