Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Address aspects of surgical preoperative and postoperative care.
  2. To learn the operating room and hospital surgical environment.
  3. Take surgical call with surgeon.
  4. To learn certain technical aspects of care that meet the student's performance capabilities.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Assist in the operating room.
  2. Literature review of specific topics related to clinical or operative cases.
  3. Teaching medical students both in the hospital and the clinic where patient follow-up may occur.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Quality of preoperative and postoperative care.
  2. Ability to take care of patients using surgical principles. Specific cases will be evaluated.
  3. Achievement of certain technical expertise.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Performance in operating room.
  2. Fund of knowledge when questionned.
  3. Daily progress notes and orders.
  4. Daily involvement in service.
