Objectives of the Elective:
-
To be able to organize orthopedic data and interpret the information to
make appropriate musculoskeletal decisions concerning referral of patients.

To familiarize the student with the recognition and diagnosis of an acquired\athletic
injury.

To formulate a plan, develop the language to describe the injury and plan.
-
To become familiar with the management and treatment of athletic injuries.
-
To be able to perform the examination of an orthopedic patient and make
a diagnosis.

To increase motor skills in the orthopedic surgical field.
Instructional Activities:
-
Participate with the preceptor in coverage of athletic events.
-
Join preceptor in specific sports medicine clinic activity.
-
Observe rehabilitation including training techniques--sports specific physical
therapy regimes and proprioceptive exercise physiology protocols.

Observation and participation in surgical techniques.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment or Objectives:
-
The student will be given reading assignments on specific topics.
-
Student workups will be requested and gone over on a one-to- one basis.
Criteria for Grading:
A written evaluation of each student will be sent to the southeast campus
dean.
