Objectives of the Elective:

To teach students how to examine and work up urological patients.
-
The student will learn the counter indications and indications to various
urologic, surgical and diagnostic techniques.

The student will become familiar with the standard laboratory tools and
their application to establish the diagnosis.

The elective will include a variety of urological experiences; male, female,
pediatric and neurogenic vesical dysfunction cases.

Students will learn the GU anatomy by assisting some surgery and cystoscopic
findings.
Instructional Activities:

The student will spend time in the outpatient clinic as time permits.

The student will assist major surgical procedures and also be present at
minor procedures and endoscopic procedures.

The student will work up a variety of patients that he may follow through
from the first encounter until hospital discharge.

Broad discussion of major urological diseases will be presented once or
twice weekly; e.g., GU infection, tumors, trauma and urinary calculi.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

The student will be given some assigned readings, case presentations. The
student's history and physical examination will be reviewed daily on a
one-to-one basis.

The student will be assigned interesting cases (including histories and
physical exam) and lectures, etc.

A written report will be presented to the assistant dean of the northwest
campus and the student upon completion of elective.
Criteria for Grading:
Dependent upon student's ability, knowledge, presentation and other performances.
