Objectives of the Elective:
The four-week elective is intended to provide examples of common ocular
pathology that will be found in medicine, as well as provide the opportunity
for the student to develop technical skills such as ophthalmoscopy and
tonometry which are necessary to the diagnosis of common ocular problems.
This course will also be tailored to meet specific needs of students who
are interested in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, neurology,
or ophthalmology as specialties.
Instructional Activities:

The opportunity will be provided to observe representative ophthalmological
surgical procedures and attend all of the teaching sessions conducted by
the ophthalmology staff.

Several didactic sessions concerning common ocular problems such as glaucoma,
trauma, internal and external diseases will be presented.

Students will work with preceptors primarily in the outpatient departments.

The program will include rotation at Trinity and UniMed Medical Center
as well as the preceptor's clinic.
Standard of Performance (Outcome) Indicating Attainment of the Objectives:
A written evaluation will be presented to the assistant dean of the northwest
campus at the end of the rotation.
