Objectives of the Elective:
This course is designed for those students seeking an opportunity to learn
to recognize and treat common orthopedic conditions encountered in ambulatory
patients such as those encountered in the office of a family practitioner,
pediatrician, surgeon or internist.
Instructional Activities:

History and physical examination of the orthopedic patient.

Knowledge of orthopedic terminology.

Opportunities to participate in the diagnosis of common orthopedic conditions.

Performance of treatments for simple conditions such as joint aspirations
or injections as well as plaster cast technique.

Outpatient facilities will be utilized primarily but there will be opportunities
for participation in the inpatient service and surgery for those students
interested in this additional experience.
Standard of Performance (Outcome) Indicating Attainment of the Objectives:
A written evaluation will be forwarded to the assistant dean of the northwest
campus at the end of the rotation.

Note: This must be considered a brief "survey-type course" with
exposure to a large number of patients rather than a didactic and highly
structured or comprehensive orthopedic course.
