Purpose:  Provide an understanding of the anesthesiologists' role in perioperative care.

Objectives:  Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Evaluate surgical patients to stratify operative risks.
  2. Understand the basics of resuscitation and managing an airway.
  3. Perform direct laryngoscopy for endotracheal intubation.
  4. Understand the impact of anesthetic drugs on normal physiologic processes.
  5. Complete a detailed preoperative assessment.
  6. Perform central venous catheterization.

Instructional Activities:  During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

  1. Independent presurgical anesthetic evaluations.
  2. The various techniques to control postoperative pain.
  3. The use of local and regional anesthesia in the management of patients.
  4. Focused discussion with the anesthesiologist regarding altered physiologic disease states and the effects of surgical techniques.

Criteria for Grading:  During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

  1. Evaluate by direct observation completeness and accuracy of anesthesia presurgical evaluation by online daily evaluation.
  2. Evaluate professionalism by direct observation and communication with anesthesia and nursing staff.
  3. Judge manual dexterity skills by direct observation during procedures.
