The period spent in orthopedics will give the student an overview of orthopedic surgery to help establish a relationship or understanding of the broad field of orthopedic practice that would be of value regardless of what area of medicine the student goes into. The student will see what type of problems are seen in the everyday practice of an orthopedic surgeon. They will see how these problems are usually handled conservatively and also what the options are if conservative treatment has not been satisfactory and surgical management is being considered. The student will learn how the orthopedist relates to the patient and also to the referring physician.
Special attention will be paid to helping the student examine the back and extremities, especially the shoulder and the knee.
Cast room experience is available.
A written evaluation will be submitted to the assistant dean of the northeast campus.
