Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Familiarize each student with basic anatomy of the eye.
  2. The student will become knowledgeable with eye physiology and pharmacology.
  3. Each student will recognize the normal eye versus abnormal eye states.
  4. The student will recognize systemic diseases in the eye.
  5. Emergency conditions of the eye will become familiar to the student.

Instructional Activities:

  1. The student will meet daily with the preceptor.
  2. Each student will spend a minimum time in surgery to obtain the objectives of the course.
  3. The student will see most of the eye patients in a clinical setting with his preceptor.
  4. Each student will have assigned readings in standard ophthalmology texts.

Standards of Performance (Outcome) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. The overall conduct, performance, and attitude of each student will be evaluated.
  2. Daily discussion.
  3. The preceptor will submit a written evaluation of each student.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Attendance and interest of each student.
  2. Professional attributes and interpersonal skills.
  3. Proficiency of skills in a clinical setting.
  4. Proficiency in supervised patient care activities.
