Cardiothoracic Surgery

                         

Location: Altru Health System, Grand Forks

Period(s) offered and number of students per period: All periods, 1 student per period

 

Purpose: To provide education and experience in the care of patients requiring the cardiothoracic surgery services through active involvement on the Cardiothoracic Surgery Service at Altru Health Systems.

 

Objectives: Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

 

  1. Participate in the care of patients with acute and chronic adult cardiac and general thoracic surgical diseases (may include inpatient and outpatient care).Demonstrate knowledge of cardiac and thoracic anatomy and pathophysiology including cardiopulmonary bypass.
  2. Evaluate diagnostic procedures related to cardiothoracic surgical diseases including CT scan, cardiac catheterization and angiography; understand their indications and rationale and gain experience in the interpretation of these procedures.
  3. Evaluate the preoperative patient (including performance of the history and physical examination and evaluation of lab and imaging data) for appropriateness to undergo the surgical procedure.
  4. Participation in operative procedures, and involvement in the postoperative care of cardiothoracic surgical patients.
  5. Document appropriately (via hand written or computer note, or dictated note) interactions with the patients seen on the elective.

 

 

Instructional Activities: During this elective, students will be involved in/experience:

 

  1. Daily patient care rounds with surgical residents and staff.
  2. Participation in cardiothoracic surgical procedures under the supervision of surgical residents and staff.
  3. Attendance and participation in educational programs of the department of surgery including conferences and lectures.
  4. Reading of standard Cardiothoracic Surgery textbooks and primary literature to support and expand clinical and didactic teaching.
  5. Instruction from surgical residents and staff on studies and procedures as they relate to the patient on the cardiothoracic surgery service.

 

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

 

1. Judge by direct observation of clinical skills and review of the patient medical records the student’s ability to perform and document an efficient history and physical exam on a patient requiring Cardiothoracic Surgery services.

 

2. Evaluate by direct observation and review of the patient medical records the student’s ability to use and interpret the laboratory and radiological studies as they pertain to the patient requiring cardiothoracic surgery services.

 

3. Judge by direct observation the student’s level of proficiency in diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

 

4. Judge by direct observation the student’s ability to work as member of an integrated health team.

 

5. Judge by direct observation the student’s ability to present cases and integrate, assess and learn new information.

 

6. Complete the standard UND 4th year evaluation form with particular attention to the skills obtained in the items listed above under “Criteria for Grading”.
