Objectives of the Elective:
-
Provide exposure to acute and chronic adult cardiac and general thoracic
surgical diseases.
-
Review cardiac and thoracic anatomy and pathophysiology including cardiopulmonary
bypass.

Exposure to diagnostic procedures related to cardiothoracic surgical diseases
including CT scan, cardiac catheterization, and angiography.

Participation in preoperative evaluation, operative procedures, and postoperative
care of cardiothoracic surgical patients.
Instructional Activities:
-
Daily patient care rounds.
-
Participation in cardiothoracic surgical procedures under the supervision
of surgical attendings.

Attendance and participation in educational programs of the Department
of Surgery including conferences and lectures.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
-
Active interaction with patients and attending surgeons.
-
Development of appropriate clinical knowledge of anatomy, pathophysiology,
and treatment of cardiothoracic surgical diseases.

Development of basic surgical skills as related to the diagnosis and treatment
of cardiothoracic surgical diseases.
Criteria for Grading:
-
Attendance and participation at daily rounds, operative procedures, and
clinics.

Evaluation by attending staff of knowledge and clinical and operative skills
related to the diagnosis and treatment of cardiothoracic surgical diseases.
