Southwest Campus

 Anesthesiology

Location of Elective: Medcenter One

Preceptor(s): Kenyon Kruse, MD

Period(s) offered: All Periods, 1/period

Purpose: Introduction to the specialty of Anesthesiology

Objectives: Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Evaluate surgical patients to stratify operative risks and understand strategies to decrease the risk for non-emergent procedures.  Determine conditions that require rapid sequence induction.
  2. Assess depth of anesthesia and recognize physiologic states that alter required anesthetic levels.  Establish central and peripheral venous and arterial access.  Place non-invasive monitoring devices, understand basic interpretation basic interpretation of these modalities.
  3. Perform direct laryngoscopy for endotracheal intubation.]
  4. Describe strategies to prevent and/or minimize postoperative nausea and vomiting, pain, and delirium as well prevention of adverse cardiac events.
  5. Integrate utilization of regional anesthetic techniques and be familiar with common blocks and their complications.
  6. Explain indications for epidural, spinal, and combined spinal epidural anesthesia in obstetric and general surgical patients.

Instructional Activities: During this elective, students will be involved in/experience:

1.   Independent pre-surgical anesthetic evaluations, to include Mallampati and ASA

classification, with the objective of minimizing anesthetic and surgical risk

2.   Management of the intra-operative patient, including focused discussion with attending MDA regarding

altered physiologic disease states and effects of surgical techniques.

3.   Interpretation of monitoring device data to include electrocardiogram, pulmonary and

central venous catheters, bispectral index, trans-esophageal echocardiography and pulse oximetry.

4.   Performing basic regional anesthetic techniques under direct observation.

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

1. Evaluate by direct observation completeness and accuracy of anesthesia pre-surgical examination.

2. Judge manual dexterity skills by direct observation during direct laryngoscopy and invasive line

    placement.

3. Evaluate professionalism by direct observation and communication with surgical staff.

4. Evaluate interpretation of monitoring device date by confrontation.
