Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Learn preintra- and postop functions of an anesthesiologist in an outpatient setting.
  2. Learn genral anesthetic techniques.
  3. Learn regional anesthesia and techniques.
  4. Understand pain treatment techniques.
  5. Actually do anesthesia under supervision  and feel very comfortable in OR procedures.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Lectures on all types of anesthesia, including pediatric, geriatric, and regional.
  2. Preop assessment of the surgical patient.
  3. Learn anesthesia set up.
  4. Manage patients under anesthesia.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. Surgical patients will be assessed by the medical students preoperatively.  The assessment and anesthetic will be discussed and and reviewed by the preceptor.
  2. Preceptor will supervise and be responsible for technical procedures.
  3. Evaluation of the student will be done by the instructor at the endo fht

Criteria for Grading:

  1. The student must have a satisfactory rating or above on six of the seven clinical competencies listed on the Fourth Year  Student Clinical Performance Evaluation.
