Objectives of the Elective:
-
Diagnosis of plastic surgery and hand surgery conditions for both office
and emergency patients.
-
Posthospitalization evaluations of surgical and nonsurgical patients.
-
Development of logical treatment plans for the plastic surgical and hand
surgical patient with attention to physiologic principles of wound healing
and complications to be encountered.
-
Critical evaluation of patients in reference to topographical regional
anatomy and its relationship to surgical problems.
-
Review of ancillary services and assistance to management of the plastic
surgery and hand surgery patient.
-
Introduction to aesthetic patients.
Instructional Activities:
-
Performance of rounds by the student with the attending plastic surgeon.
-
The student's participation in the operating room.
-
Student's participation in the clinic.
-
Office/emergency evaluation of the student in relationship to new patients
and new plastic hand surgery problems as observed by the proctor.

Participation in the State Cleft Lip/Cleft Palate Clinic, if it meets while
the student is on rotation.

Reading from available texts for the student which include: Reconstructive
Plastic Surgery, Green, Volumes I and II.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
-
Personal Observation of the student in relationship to rapport with the
patient, understanding of the plastic surgical and hand surgical problem,
and assessment of the proposed plan of treatment for the patient including
anticipated complications that could be encountered.

Evaluation of the student's progress and relationship in his establishment
of rapport with the patient, understanding in the patient's needs, empathy
and sensitivity to the patient and his disease.
Criteria for Grading:
-
A written evaluation of the student's performance will be sent to the assistant
dean of the Southwest Campus.
