Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Become familiar with the basics of an ophthalmological eye examination.
  2. Become familiar with the use of ophthalmic instrumentation.
  3. Become comfortable examining and treating basic ocular diseases as well as presentation of systemic disease.
  4. Understand the physiology and pathology of vision ("Why I Can't See").

Instructional Activities:

  1. Readings assignments will be given and discussed with the preceptor.
  2. The student will be involved in the work-up and follow-up of ophthalmic patients under the direction of the preceptor.

Standards of performance indicating attainment of objectives, including how this will be documented.

  1. The ophthalmologist in daily contact will question and evaluate the student.
  2. Selected readings will be given to the students and their knowledge will be evaluated.
  3. The patients will be assigned to the students and their presentation to the preceptor will be evaluated.

Criteria for Grading:

A final written evaluation will be given to the assistant dean of the southwest campus.
