Objectives of the Elective:
- Become familiar with the basics of an ophthalmological eye examination.
- Become familiar with the use of ophthalmic instrumentation.
- Become comfortable examining and treating basic ocular diseases as
well as presentation of systemic disease.
- Understand the physiology and pathology of vision ("Why I Can't
See").
Instructional Activities:
- Readings assignments will be given and discussed with the preceptor.
- The student will be involved in the work-up and follow-up of ophthalmic
patients under the direction of the preceptor.
Standards of performance indicating attainment of objectives, including
how this will be documented.
- The ophthalmologist in daily contact will question and evaluate the
student.
- Selected readings will be given to the students and their knowledge
will be evaluated.
- The patients will be assigned to the students and their presentation
to the preceptor will be evaluated.
Criteria for Grading:
A final written evaluation will be given to the assistant dean of the
southwest campus.
