Offered: June - December Positions: 1 student/4 weeks

Objectives of the Elective:

  1. To become aware of the skills of a physical therapist. occupational therapist, and athletic trainer in the recognition and evaluation of orthopedic/sports  injuries or acquired disabilities.
  2. To become aware of the skills of a physical therapist, occupational therapist, and athletic trainer in the management, disposition, and prevention of of orthopedic/sports injuries or acquired disabilities.
  3. It is the intent of this rotation  to educate medical students in evaluative skills which can be used to further enhance the clinical setting in the evaluation of ortahopedic/sports injuries or acquired disabilities while also developing an attitude towards the clinical significance and importance of referring patients for  monitored therapeutic procedures to be performed by physical therapists. occupational therapists, and athletic trainers.

Instructional Activities:

  1. The student will be exposed to evaluative, treatment, and preventative procedures used in both the clinical setting and athletic training environments..
  2. The student will be given the opportunity to develop evaluatory skills (history taking and physical assesment) or orthopedic/sports injuries or acquired disabilities.

Standards of performance indicating attainment of objectives, including how this will be documented.

  1. The student will be measured upon his or her skills of providing appropriate and accurate assessment of orthopedic/sports injuries or acquired disabilities.
  2. The student will be measured on his or her skills in determining the appropriateness of patient referral for therapeutic procedures to be provided by a physical therapist, occupational therapist, and athletic trainer..

Criteria for Grading:

A written evaluation will be presented to the student and the assistant dean for the appropriate campus.
