Positions: 1 per period
Objectives of the Elective:
- Learn the proper techniques and skills necessary in the performance
of a complete ENT physical examination.
- Learn the treatment of all the common ENT disorders as well as the
indications for medical and surgical intervention. This will include ear,
nose and throat emergency care.
- Learn basic audiometric testing and the interpretation of audiometric
tests which are performed.
- Learn the proper use of instruments in the office and the operating
room. Also, nine surgical techniques will be exposed to the student.
Instructional Activities:
- The student will receive office patient exposure and will work up assigned
patients.
- The student will be given reading assignments to be discussed as scheduled.
- The student will scrub on operative procedures with participation in
patient care expected. The student will be first assistant in surgery on
cases.
- The student will be involved in teaching rounds on inpatients and consultations.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
- The student will be assigned specific reading material with an oral
weekly examination given (75% of grade).
- The student will be observed in his/her performance of a physical examination
and satisfactory preparation for surgical cases.
- The student will be assigned in- and outpatient work-ups, stressing
the disease diagnosis and planned treatment to be followed.
Criteria for Grading:
The preceptor will complete a written evaluation which will be presented
to the assistant dean for the southwest campus. The student will also do
a written evaluation of this elective.
