Objectives of the Electives:
-
Perioperative assessment and management.
-
Evaluation of risk.
-
Anesthetic management, including pharmacology and physiology of anesthesia,
surgery, CNS, CVS, renal and pulmonary systems.
-
Fluids, electrolytes, and acid base evaluation and management.
-
Management of shock.
-
Technical skills including airway management, intubation, spinals, intravenous
access, central lines, arterial lines and SG catheters.
-
Recovery room management of patient.
-
Postoperative management of surgical patient in ICU.
-
Management of ventilator.
-
Involvement in pain clinic.
Instructional Activities:
-
Preoperative assessment of surgical patient.
-
Technical skills to include intubation of trachea, intravenous lines, arterial
lines, and central venous catheter.
-
Postoperative care of the surgical patient in the recovery room and the
ICU.
-
Management of ventilator and respiratory care and ICU rounds.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:
-
Surgical patients will be assessed by the medical student preoperatively.
The assessment and anesthetic plan will be discussed and reviewed with
the instructor.

Instructor will supervise and be responsible for an adequate number of
technical procedures.

Evaluation of student will be done by the instructor at the end of rotation.

One-to-one lectures, rounds, oral questions.
Criteria for Grading:
-
Have a good understanding of the pre-op visit intraoperative care and decision
making during an anesthetic.

A written evaluation will be presented to the student and to the assistant
dean for the appropriate campus.
