Assumption:

  1. The student should have knowledge of the anatomy and embryology of the urinary tract.
  2. The student can obtain a pertinent history and physical regarding the urinary system.

Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Discuss the diagnosis and workup of a patient with painless hematuria, urinary infection and renal mass.
  2. Describe diagnosis, staging, and treatment of renal cell carcinoma.
  3. Discuss the etiology, evaluation, and treatment of renal calculus disease, blunt, and penetrating trauma, and urinary obstruction.
  4. Discuss the contributing causes, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer of the bladder, prostate, and testicle. Discuss the cause, identification, and treatment of bladder outlet obstruction in benign disease to include benign prostatic hypertrophy and neurogenic bladder.

Instructional Activities:

  1. The student will be given a specific reading assignment to include titles, authors, book editions, and page numbers and a number of monographed handouts on various disease entities.
  2. The student will work up at least five patients a week and make morning rounds with the preceptor each morning prior to surgery or office hours.
  3. The patient will review teaching films and x-ray slides of various disease entities with the instructor.
  4. The student will assist in urologic surgical procedures and office evaluation, digital rectal examination, x-ray review, etc.
  5. Two to three 1/2 hour seminars will be held each week regarding the specific topics with the preceptor.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. The student's history and physical evaluation will be reviewed for accuracy and thoroughness. These areas will be discussed with the student.
  2. The student's repository of knowledge and judgment regarding urologic problems will be explored by his/her performance and application of the working knowledge needed before entering the elective.
  3. The student's enthusiasm and availability will be evaluated in relationship to his/her cooperation concerning the various teaching methods, reading assignments, etc.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Examination will be given at the end of the elective based on the assigned reading material given at the beginning of the elective.
  2. An overall critique on the patient's performance in each of the various areas will be provided after the completion of the elective interval.
