Students in this elective will be under the direct supervision of one or more of the staff members listed above. The elective will be designed for the student desiring additional experience in general, vascular, and noncardiac thoracic surgery. The student will be expected to evaluate preoperative patients, become familiar with surgical diagnosis and formulate a presurgical evaluation (i.e.; lab and x-rays, arteriograms), participate in all major surgical procedures, and to participate in their postoperative care. The student will receive instruction on surgical technique and anatomy. The student will also be expected to perform minor surgical procedures under the direct supervision of the staff physician. The student will be expected to take surgical call with the staff physician and participate in the evaluation of all emergency cases when he/she is on call.
The student will be evaluated by the staff physician during daily rounds. He/she will also be evaluated as to his overall performance during the elective and will also have an oral examination at the completion of the elective.
Opportunities for case reports and writing papers are also available to the student if he/she wishes.
