Goals:
-
The elective will provide exposure to a wide range of general sugery for
the student, particularly the student who has an interest in proceeding
with a surgical career.

Emphasis will be on the recognition of acute and chronic surgical diseases.

The student will be responsible, under faculty guidance, for preoperative
evauations on surgical patients as well as participating in operative procedures
and postoperative care.

Operative principles will be taught and stressed. Students will function
as part of the surgical team caring for the patients.
Instructional Activities:

Assist in the operating room.

Literature review of specific topics related to clinical or operative fases.

Teaching medial students both in the hospital and outpatient clinic.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

Quality of preoperative evaluation and postoperative care.
-
Ability to take care of patients using surgical principles. Specific
cases will be evaluated.

Achievement of basic technical expertise.
Criteria for Grading:

Performance in operating room.
-
Fund of knowledge when questioned.

Daily progress notes and orders.
-
Daily involvement in service.
