Objectives of the Elective:

  1. To provide an overview of diagnostic radiology including its strengths and particularly its limitations as part of health and disease assessment.
  2. To better understand the role of the radiologist as clinician, and to better appreciate these interactions with other clinicians.
  3. To facilitate the student's ability to understand and interpret diagnostic imaging studies, commensurate with training level.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Daily film interprebation observation.
  2. Participation in all procedures including fluoroscopy. Angiography is not performed here.
  3. Directed readings in basic texts.
  4. Case discussions, including the concept of differention diagnosis.
  5. Benign "hot seat" sessions.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. To gain confidence and reasonable proficiency in imaging interpretation and to relate these studies to patient's disease processes and the continued work-up of those processes and their pathologic or anatomic correlates.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Personal interaction with preceptor attendance and participation.
  2. Readings (based on areas of interest).
  3. Results of written and oral exam, including imaging interpretation.
  4. Advancement of knowledge base.
