Objectives of the Elective:
-
To provide the student with a comprehensive overview of the field of diagnostic
radiology.

To present basic fundamentals and demonstrate specific imaging techniques
within the specialty, including general radiography (and its related special
procedures), CT Imaging, Ultrasound, Nuclear Imaging and MRI.

To present specific information concerning the conduct of each examination
performed with emphasis on clinical indications for performance and interpretation
of information obtained.

To provide access to educational resources relating to the field, including
books, periodicals, videotapes and a teaching x-ray film library.

To allow the student to concentrate on specific types of imaging which
pertain to areas of special interest the student may be developing.
Instructional Activities:
-
Observing the performance of imaging procedures.
-
Participation in image interpretation sessions.
-
Case discussions with preceptors.
-
Use of available educational resources.
Standards of performance indicating attainment of objectives, including
how this will be documented.

Standards of performance are based upon the personal interaction between
student and preceptor during the elective period.

Attendance during performance of procedures.
-
Participation in interpretation of studies.
-
Response to informal interrogation.
-
Evidence of sustained interest.
A written assessment of student's performance will be prepared by and reviewed
by all involved preceptors, and sent to the assistant dean of the appropriate
campus.
Criteria for Grading:
Must have satisfactory rating or better on five of the seven clinical competencies
(when applicable) as listed in the fourth year student clinical performance
evaluation.
