Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Familiarization of student with the role of the pathologist in clinical practice.
  2. Review the gross and microscopic appearance of common surgical specimens.
  3. Correlate patient history and physical examination with anatomic changes.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Daily review of surgical slides with preceptor using two- headed microscope.
  2. Examination of gross tissue specimens with emphasis on proper sampling.
  3. Review of patient histories recorded in medical records.
  4. Students are expected to review the pathology of some of the conditions encountered using standard texts and the library.
  5. Participation in autopsies, including forensic cases.
  6. Review of nuclear medicine and ultrasound images.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

Ability to outline essential elements in pathology report and why they are included for some of the common conditions encountered in this rotation.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Basis of interest.
  2. Ability to correlate clinical and anatomic material.
  3. General medical knowledge.
