Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism

Purpose: To gain clinical experience in pediatric
endocrinology.
Objectives of the Elective: Following
successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate ability to obtain
a pertinent pediatric endocrinology history, perform appropriate physical
exam, and formulate reasonable differential diagnoses and management
plans.
- Demonstrate the knowledge of
both normal and abnormal growth and pubertal development in children and
adolescents.
- Recognize the signs and
symptoms of the onset of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in children and
adolescents.
- Report the practice guideline
management of diabetic ketoacidosis.
- Demonstrate a working
knowledge of the most common metabolic disorders of childhood.
- Demonstrate the ability to
evaluate children with suspected hypothyroidism.
- Describe the evaluation of a
baby born with ambiguous genitalia.
Instructional Activities: During the
elective, the student will be involved in/experience:
- The work-up and follow-up of
all patients admitted to the preceptor as well as those seen in
consultation.
- The work-up and follow-up of
both general and endocrine patients.
- Morning rounds with the
preceptor.
- General pediatric on call
responsibilities with the preceptor.
- A core curriculum of
pediatric endocrinology and metabolism, emphasizing common pediatric
endocrine and metabolic disorders.
- Discussions with the
preceptor of assigned readings.
Criteria for Grading: During and
following this elective, the preceptor will:
- Utilize the standardized
UNDSMHS senior elective form.
- Assess the timeliness and
professional behavior of the student.
- Assess by observation the
student's ability to evaluate children with short stature, delayed
puberty, precocious puberty, sexual ambiguity, diabetes mellitus, and
abnormal state-required newborn metabolic screening test results.
