PEDIATRIC MEDICINE

 

Location:          Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate  Health Care Center – Sisseton, SD

Period(s) offered and number of students per period:         All periods/1 student per period   (The student must arrange elective directly with the preceptors as all periods may not always be available.)

 

Purpose:         Gain clinical experience in caring for children in a rural setting.

 

Objectives: Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

 

1.         Describe the unique role of rural pediatricians in caring for acute and clinical illnesses.

2.         Evaluate and treat pediatric patients as commensurate with fourth year education.

3.         Identify the unique public health problems of Native American children on reservations.

 

Instructional Activities: During this elective, students will be involved in/experience:

 

1.         Gathering of a database on patients seen.

2.         Outpatient care of assigned patients.

3.         Discussion with preceptor of assigned readings.

4.         Topic presentation of a health issue affecting rural or Native American children.

 

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

 

1.         Submit a summative evaluation on a form approved by CEC.

2.         Assess the quality of the completed assignments and tasks.

3.         Assess the quality of the discussions and oral presentations of the assigned preceptor’s patient cases.

4.         Evaluate the extent of meeting the student’s own learning objectives for this elective.

5.         Evaluate student’s professional behavior.

6.         Assess quality of topic presentation.
