Pediatric Medicine/Public Health

 

Location:  Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Health Care Center – Sisseton, SD

Period(s) offered and number of students per period:         All periods, 1 per period

                                                                                                Student must arrange elective directly with the

                                                                                                preceptor as all periods may not be always available

 

Purpose:  To gain experience in addressing public health issues related to children.

 

Objectives: Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

 

1.         Evaluate pediatric health problems from a public health perspective.

2.         Use epidemiologic methods to evaluate public health issues.

3.         Design interventions on a community-wide basis.

4.         Find and use public health data from a variety of sources.

5.         Work in a cross-cultural community.

 

Instructional Activities: During this elective, students will be involved in/experience:

 

1.         An epidemiologic investigation of a specific childhood public health issue with preceptor.

2.         Data evaluation.

3.         Action plan formulation.

4.         Action plan implementation as elective time allows.

5.         Evaluation of intervention effectiveness as elective time allows.

 

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

 

1.         Submit a summative evaluation on a form approved by CEC. 

2.         Assess the quality of assigned tasks including data evaluation and action plan formulation.

3.         Evaluate the extent of the student’s own learning objectives for this elective.
