Research Project Practicum and Presentation

 

Location of Elective:    UNDSMHS – Grand Forks

 

Preceptor(s):  Larry Burd, Ph.D.

 

Period(s) offered and number of students per period:         All periods/1 per period

 

Purpose:  To gain experience in clinical research.

 

Objectives: Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

 

1.         Plan a research project including literature review, testable hypothesis development, data collection and analysis, organize data collection and where applicable and time permits, improve student’s ability to collect data, enter data, and complete data analysis.

OR

2.         Select an ongoing research project for participation and review project development up to the existing time point. This will include learning the concepts of and participating in literature review, hypothesis development, developing data entry, data analysis, and manuscript completion.

 

Instructional Activities: During this elective, students will be involved in/experience:

 

1.         Participate in data entry and data analysis or manuscript preparation as appropriate.

2.         Develop abstract for presentation.

3.         Develop audiovisual materials appropriate for the project.

 

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

 

1.         Submit a summative evaluation on a form approved by CEC.

2.         Assess the quality of skills in literature review and development of testable hypothesis.

3.         Assess skills in data collection and analysis.

4.         Assess quality of written abstract.

5.         Assess quality of abstract presentation.

6.         Assess participation and assigned tasks if Objective #2 is chosen.
