Offered: Since this elective involves travel, Dr. Martsolf should be contacted by each student to arrange specific periods and travel arrangements.  Fall and Spring are best.

PURPOSE:  To gain clinical experience in the care of children with genetic and/or dysmorphic disorders.

Objectives of the Elective: Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Report principles of medical genetics.
  2. Apply these medical genetics principles in the clinical setting.
  3. Explain how medical genetic services in a rural state are provided..

Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

  1. Evaluations, discussions, and counseling patients with genetic disorders.
  2. Discussions with preceptor of assigned readings.
  3. Lectures presented by the preceptor.

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

  1. Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective evaluation form.
  2. Assess the student's acquisition of medical genetic principles using oral examination.
