Objectives::

  1. Descrube the unique role of rural pediatricians in caring for acute and clinical illnesses.
  2. Evaluate and treat pediatric patients as commensurate with fourth-year education.
  3. Identify the unique public health problems of Native American children on reservations.

Intructional Activities:

  1. The student will work under the guidance of the pediatrician in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  2. The student will be allowed time for textbook and medical literal literature reading on pertinent topics.
  3. The student will participate in call on the days the preceptor is on call.

Standards of Performance (Outcome) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. The student is required to keep a data base on patients seen, which will be reviewed.
  2. The student is expected to perform appropriate documentation including well-child care and problem-focused progress notes in a clinic setting, and admission note and daily progress notes in hospitalized patients commensurate with fourth-year education.
  3. The student is expected to make brief presentations about patients commensurate with fourth-year education.
  4. Standard student assessment form will be completed and submitted.
  5. Student will write and present a topic of interest specifically focused on an issue affecting rural or Native American children.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Review of completeness of patient data base.
  2. Evaluation of student's ability to demonstrate competency in an oral case presentation.
  3. Evaluation of student's ability to demonstrate competency in written cases.
  4. Evaluation of student's ability to formulate proper differential diagnosis.
  5. Evaluation of student's ability to provide appropriate patient management strategies.
  6. Evaluation of student's ability to demonstrate the ability to research the appropriate
