Objectives of the Elective:  Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an increased knowledge base in general pediatrics
  2. Demonstrate improved skills in history taking and physical assessment of infants and children, and to record this information in a concise manner..
  3. Demonstrate improved skills in growth and psychomotor development in normal and abnormal infants and children.
  4. Evaluate assigned patients and participate in the medical management of these patients, including the ordering of appropriate laboratory and imaging studies as well as formation of appropriate treatment and medication plans.
  5. Demonstrate ability to perform common office and inpatient procedure skills..
  6. Assess and evaluate patients, including a concise differential diagnosis and management plan.

Instructional Activities:  During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

  1. The formation of individual learning objectives for this elective under the guidance of the course director.
  2. Preceptor or course director assigned clinical and didactic activities.
  3. Care of ill neonates in the NICU if requested by the student.

Criteria for Grading:  During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

  1. Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective evaluation form.
  2. Assess the quality of the completed assignments and tasks.
  3. Assess the quality of the discussions and oral presentations of the assigned preceptor's patient cases.
  4. Evaluate the extent of meeting the student's own learning objectives for this elective.
  5. Evaluate the student's professional behavior.
