Pediatric Infectious Diseases

Purpose: To gain clinical experience in pediatric infectious
diseases and microbiology laboratory sciences.
Objectives: Following successful completion of this elective, the student
will be able to:
1. Demonstrate the ability to perform an appropriate history and physical exam of the pediatric patient
with an infectious disease and/or immune disorder.
2. Demonstrate the ability to formulate the proper diagnostic evaluation and management plan of the pediatric patient with an infectious disease and/or an immunological disorder.
Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student will be involved
in/experience:
1. The work-up and follow-up of all patients for whom a pediatric infectious disease consult is requested.
2. The work-up and follow-up of ambulatory pediatric infectious disease patients, including Travel Clinic.
3. Daily morning and afternoon hospital rounds with the pediatric infectious disease consultant.
4. Microbiology mini-rotation and intermittent microbiology lab rounds to review slides and positive cultures from infectious disease patients
5. The performance of spinal taps and office-based incision and drainage procedures, if applicable, under the direct supervision of the pediatric infectious disease consultant.
6. The presentation of pediatric infectious disease patients at conference or Pediatric Grand Rounds.
7. Discussions with the preceptor of assigned readings.
8. No on-call duties during the rotation.
Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:
1. Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective evaluation form.
2. Assess by observation the student’s competency in the initial evaluation of a pediatric infectious diseases patient.
5. Assess by observation the student’s competency in evaluation and initiation of appropriate treatment
6. Assess by observation the student’s competency in evaluating and presenting cases of children who may have an infection and/or immune system disorder.
5. Assess timeliness and professional behavior.
