NEONATOLOGY

Offered:   All periods - One student per rotation

Purpose:  To gain clinical experience in care of newborn.

Objectives:  Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:  

  1. Perform a physical examination and assessment of normal newborn as well as ill preterm and term newborns.
  2. Demonstrate the principles of resuscitation and stabilization of the newborn..
  3. Report common diagnostic management and problems of the ill newborm..
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of fluid, electrolyte, and nutritional management of both preterm and term infants..
  5. Anticipate the expected complication of neonates born to mothers with high risk pregnancies.

Instructional Activities: During this elective, students will be involved in/experience:

  1. Daily patient rounds in which the student is responsible for forming appropriate assessment and care plans..
  2. Daily discussions of specific patient problems based on the reading and instructional assignments given to the student by the preceptor.
  3. Attendance at c-section and high risk deliveries..
  4. Common procedures performed in the setting of neonatal intensive care under the close supervision of the preceptor.
  5. The calculation of enteral and parenteral nutritional requirements of the neonate.
  6. Weekly core curriculum lectures.
  7. A team approach (including family involvement) to the management of the ill neonate.

Criteria for Grading:  During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

  1. Complete the specific UND 4th year evaluation form and submit it to the Campus Dean's office.
  2. Assess the quality of patient evaluations and daily notes.
  3. Assess the quality of performance of the instructed procedures.
  4. Assess the quality of oral and written presentations to the preceptor of assigned readings..
