Purpose:  To gain clinical experience in pediatric neurology.

Objectives:  Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to obtain a complete neurology history, perform a neurology examination and provide differential diagnoses of common disorders affecting the nervous system in children.
  2. Demonstrate the knowledge of the diagnostic evaluation of children with common neurology problems and the formulation of proper treatment plans.
  3. Demonstrate basic skills and knowledge in developmental pediatrics.
  4. Correlate neurological signs and symptoms with neuroanatomical disorders.
  5. Explain method and purpose of the following electrodiagnostic studies:  EEG, ABR, VEP, PSG.
  6. Participate in sleep medicine studies (optional).

Instructional Activities:  During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

  1. The clinical evaluation of both inpatients and outpatients under the direction of the pediatric neurologist.
  2. The direct care of inpatients under the supervision of the pediatric neurologist.
  3. Discussions with the preceptor of assigned readings in recent and classical pediatric neurology literature.
  4. Brief assigned topic presentations to the preceptor.
  5. Assigned educational conferences.
  6. Sleep medicine patient evaluations (optional).

Criteria for Grading:  During and following this elective, the preceptor will:

  1. Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective form.
  2. Assess timeliness and professionalism during the elective experience.
  3. Assess appropriate completion and quality of assigned tasks and presentations.
  4. Assess by observation the student's ability to obtain pertinent history, complete competent neurology exam, and formulate a reasonable differential diagnosis and management plan for children with neurological disorders.
