Purpose:  To gain clinical experience in the care of children and adolescents with gastrointestinal disorders.

Objectives of the Elective:  Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify presenting symptoms and signs of abdominal pain, constipation, failure to thrive, inflammatory bowel disease, and celiac disease.
  2. Describe clinical diagnostic procedures pertaining to gastrointestinal patients.
  3. Identify the important principles of infant nutritional support.
  4. Perform problem and subspecialty specific history and physical exam.
  5. Describe the evaluation of a child presenting with jaundice.

Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

  1. Attending clinic with preceptor.
  2. Observation of diagnostic and biopsy procedures.
  3. Attending assigned lectures and conferences.
  4. Discussion with preceptor regarding assigned reading.
  5. Care of children in preceptor's general pediatric pracatice.

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:   

  1. Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective evaluation form.
  2. Assess the quality of the completed assignments and tasks.
  3. Assess the quality of discussions and presentations.
  4. Evaluate the student's professional behavior.
