Offered:    All periods.  (Desired time period must first be approved by Dr. Kantack)  1/Period

Purpose:  To gain clinical experience in the care of children with pulmonary, allergic, and immunological disorders.

Objectives of the Elective:  Following successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify clinical manifestations of common allergy/atopic conditions.
  2. Recognize potential immunodefiiency states.
  3. Perform problem-focused history and physical examination of infants, children, and adolescents with allergic/atopic and immunodeficiency conditions.
  4. Recognize presenting symptoms, demonstrate physical findings, explain initial evaluation, and educate patient/family regarding childhood asthma.
  5. Interpret spirometry results for common pulmonary conditions.
  6. Interpret skin test results.

Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student will be involved in/experience:

  1. Attending clinic with preceptor.
  2. Participation in workup and evaluation of patients referred to pediatric allergist.
  3. Attending all relevant teaching conferences.

Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor will:   

  1. Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective evaluation form.
  2. Assess the quality of the completed assignments and tasks.
  3. Assess the quality of discussions and presentations.
  4. Evaluate the student's professional behavior.
  5. Evaluate student's participation in patient care.
