Offered: All periods. (Desired time
period must first be approved by Dr. Kantack) 1/Period
Purpose: To gain clinical experience in the care of
children with pulmonary, allergic, and immunological disorders.
Objectives of the Elective: Following successful
completion of this elective, the student will be able to:
- Identify clinical manifestations of common allergy/atopic conditions.
- Recognize potential immunodefiiency states.
- Perform problem-focused history and physical examination of infants,
children, and adolescents with allergic/atopic and immunodeficiency
conditions.
- Recognize presenting symptoms, demonstrate physical findings, explain
initial evaluation, and educate patient/family regarding childhood asthma.
- Interpret spirometry results for common pulmonary conditions.
- Interpret skin test results.
Instructional Activities: During this elective, the student will be involved
in/experience:

Attending clinic with preceptor.

Participation in workup and evaluation of patients referred to pediatric
allergist.

Attending all relevant teaching conferences.
Criteria for Grading: During and following this elective, the preceptor
will:
- Utilize the standardized UNDSMHS senior elective evaluation form.
- Assess the quality of the completed assignments and tasks.
- Assess the quality of discussions and presentations.
- Evaluate the student's professional behavior.
- Evaluate student's participation in patient care.
