Objectives of the Elective:

  1. To relate surgical pathology's role in diagnosis and management of patient care.
  2. To provide an overview to the subsections of the clinical laboratory and an introduction to instrumentation and methodologies.
  3. To become familiar with the logical sequence of ordering laboratory tests and their interpretation.
  4. To provide an exposure to hospital autopsy pathology service.
  5. To be introduced to laboratory information systems, computers, and medical informatics.

Instructional Activities:

  1. At the onset of the elective, the student will be given a choice of interests in the disciplines of anatomic and clinical pathology. The student will be asked to prioritize these areas for discussion.
  2. The student will be asked to provide interpretation of surgical pathology cases at our daily conference.
  3. The student will be asked for interpretation of abnormal laboratory tests from all areas of the clinical laboratory.
  4. The student will attend selected teaching autopsy cases.
  5. The student will rotate through the subsections of the clinical laboratory; chemistry, blood bank, microbiology, hematology, clinical microscopy, and HLA tissue typing.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

  1. The student must be able to recognize basic histology and provide interpretation of gross and microscopic surgical pathology specimens.
  2. The student will be able to answer questions, as to how and where a test is performed.
  3. The student must demonstrate appropriateness of laboratory tests and provide interpretation of these tests.
  4. The student must assist in the autopsy process and be able to relate pathophysiological processes and laboratory abnormalities.
  5. The student must demonstrate a basic working knowledge of computers and their laboratory applications.
  6. A written evaluation will be submitted to the student and the assistant dean for the southwest campus.

  4. Case studies.
