Objectives of the Elective:

1. This elective is primarily designed for the student considering a residency in family practice, obstetrics and gynecology or who is strongly motivated to acquire additional OB/GYN skills.
2. Provide a greater knowledge of the basic principles and practice of obstetrics and gynecology in a clinical setting.
3. Become comfortable with normal labor and delivery, including fetal monitoring and episiotomy repair skills, and develop a recognition of high risk pregnancy as well as a rational approach to management of common OB problems.
4. Provide an opportunity to refine skills in history taking, breast exams, pap smears, pelvic exams and common office procedures which will enhance gynecology skills of value to any primary care physician.
5. Identify interesting OB/GYN patients, both for the student's enhanced experience and so that individual objectives can be maximized.

Instructional Activities:

1. Daily participation in clinic, surgery, delivery and hospital rounds as directed by the preceptor. Attendance is mandatory.
2. Individual reading from standard textbooks and scientific articles to supplement clinical material as directed by the preceptor.
3. Attendance at monthly OB/GYN Grand Rounds and other related OB/GYN meetings and conferences is expected.
4. Other related activities, including research or formal paper, at the discretion of the preceptor.

Standards of Performance (Outcomes) Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

1. The student will be on call to follow labor patients, attend deliveries and evaluate ER patients as directed.
2. The student will attend clinic, surgery and hospital rounds with appropriate emphasis on preoperative and postoperative care.
3. The student will have daily assessment of clinical performance through case presentations and preceptor discussions.
4. Specific testing, formal or informal, of the student will be at the discretion of the preceptor.

Criteria for Grading:

1. Goals of the rotation will be discussed initially, intermittently throughout and again at the end of the elective to assure their attainment and mutual satisfaction.
2. The satisfactory completion of all assigned reading and research projects will be evaluated by the preceptor. Deficiencies must be remedied before the completion of the elective.
3. Student attendance, attitude, contribution to the health care team, as well as acceptable progress in clinical skills and knowledge will all be considered by the preceptor in determining the final grade.
4. A written student evaluation will be presented to the student, appropriate campus dean and chair of the Department of OB/GYN at the completion of the rotation.
