Objectives of the Elective:

  1. Acquaint medical student with the patient population served and interventions of a general psychiatrist trained in adult psychiatry.
  2. To develop skills in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders.
  3. To provide some insight into treatment modalities that may be employed in the primary care setting prior to obtaining a psychiatric consult/referral.
  4. To develop an awareness of the family dynamics of the family affected by the patient with mental illness.
  5. To introduce the concept of chemical dependency and its appropriate diagnosis, treatment and long term management.

Instructional Activities:

  1. Participate in outpatient evaluation and treatment at the North Central Human Service Center with all age groups.
  2. Participate in inpatient treatment of adolescent and adult populations and occasionally children at UniMed Medical Center.
  3. Participate in psychiatric consultation in adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in both UniMed and Trinity Hospitals in Minot.
  4. Increase knowledge of psychiatry through selected readings.

Standards of Performance Indicating Attainment of Objectives:

A written evaluation will be submitted to the assistant dean of the northwest campus at the end of the rotation.

Criteria for Grading:

  1. Interview technique.
  2. Diagnostic formulation.
  3. Treatment planning.
