NEUR 9305
Northeast Campus
Adult Neurology
Location of Elective: Altru Hospital/Clinic
Preceptor(s): Matthew Roller, M.D.
Period(s) offered and
number of students per period: 1/period
Purpose: Increase recognition and evaluation of neurological
disorders and appropriate management plans.
Objectives: Following
successful completion of this elective, the student will be able to:
1. Display competency in complete history taking (neurological and medical), perform a neurological examination, and develop a differential diagnosis with plan of management for common neurological disorders.
2. Identify indications for techniques employed in common ancillary tests done in the evaluation of the neuroaxis.
3. Demonstrate increased knowledge of neuroanatomy and its application in clinical neurology.
4. Formulate a neurologic diagnosis in a logical stepwise manner based on the signs and symptoms of the patient and utilizing one’s knowledge of neurophysiology, neuropathology, and neuroanatomy.
5. Discuss the treatment of patients with neurologic disease in an inpatient and outpatient setting.
6. Evaluate and present patients, discuss the neuroanatomy and localization of the patient’s illness based on presenting complaint, history, symptoms, and signs along with its neurophysiologic and neuropathologic basis.
7. Order appropriate diagnostic studies in the evaluation of neurological disorders.
8. Cite some of the current pertinent literature and textbook descriptions of common neurological problems and utilize literature research to improve his/her knowledge of less common disorders.
Instructional Activities: During this
elective, the student will be involved in/experience:
1. Performance of complete history and physical
exams on patients under the direction of the preceptor with the emphasis on the
neurological aspects of each case.
2. Dictating and/or writing history and physical
exams to be reviewed and critiqued by the preceptor.
3. Participation in inpatient rounds with
preceptor, including evaluation and management of patients under direct
supervision, and following outpatients in the clinic.
4. Participation in call with preceptor.
5. Oral presentation (one half hour) of one neurological disorder (pathology, signs, symptoms and treatment), citing the recent advances in the literature.
Criteria for Grading: During and
following this elective, the preceptor will:
1. Assess by direct observation the ability of the student to obtain a satisfactory neurological history and perform a satisfactory neurological examination.
2. Assess by direct observation the ability of the student to present a patient, discuss the differential diagnosis, and propose a rational evaluation and treatment plan.
3. Evaluate by direct observation the competency of the student in ordering appropriate diagnostic studies in the evaluation of neurological disorders.
4. Evaluate by direct observation the ability of the student to correlate neurological signs and symptoms to the neuroanatomical and neuropathological process causing the abnormalities.
5. Assess by direct observation the student’s familiarity with current, pertinent literature and textbook descriptions of common and unusual neurological disorders.
6. Judge by direct observation the student’s enthusiastic participation in the rotation.
7. Judge by direct observation the student’s growth of knowledge in neurology.
